The Danger of Self-Righteousness
Alright, I will say it first...I can be self righteous. I’m pretty sure we all can if we are being honest. It’s almost human nature. I’m fact, Jesus knew it. You see, to be self righteous simply means we think we’ve met God’s standards in our own eyes. When was the last time you said or thought, “yeah, but at least I don’t _______”? “He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."”Luke 18:9-14 Jesus warns us against our self-righteousness. He’s quite aware that while we have seemingly insatiable, unstoppable lusts for everything from fame, money, sex, and power. It’s actually our pride that will be our down fall. No question about it. I’ve learned that Jesus is both terribly dangerous and terribly safe. For the proud, He’s the biggest imaginable threat and for the humble, He is the securest refuge. We trust ourselves too much. Self-righteousness is a dangerous delusion. “No one is good but God Alone” -Luke 18:19Be Nice, Grace Wins
