What Does It Mean to Be Blessed?

2 min readJames 1:12

So I was thinking about something the other day. You know we always hear folks say, "I am blessed," but what are we actually referring to when we say that? I get it when we hear it in relationship to money, belongings, family, and health, but is that what it really means? I think to a degree, but there is way more to it.

"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him." James 1:12

As we've talked about staying true to our faith under hard times and how that builds perseverance, James tells us that the man who persists in doing what is right under hard times is blessed.

But James flips the script on us. He says the blessed man isn't the one with the easy life. It's the one who stays planted in God when everything is trying to uproot him. He holds fast to God's promise of the crown of life.

No matter the pressure pushing him from within and without, he will not give in.

The promise of James 1:12 should encourage us to set our lives in the context of eternity and seek things which are above.

Ultimately, the blessed man endures temptation because he loves Jesus. And that, y'all, is what it really means to be blessed.

Be Nice. Grace Wins.
