Cancel the Debt
Forgiven people should be forgiving people. Yes.
God gave us forgiveness and redemption through His Son Jesus, so why would we not extend the same thing to those who hurt us? What makes His forgiveness unconditional and ours subjective? It doesn't, and it shouldn't.
I'm not saying it's easy. I'm just saying we have to. Carrying resentment around in our hearts is a cancer that will eventually eat us alive. I come back to this every year because I keep needing the reminder myself.
"Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."
Colossians 3:13
So what does this forgiveness look like in our world?
It is a decision we make to cancel the debt, regardless of whether the other person ever admits what they did or owns up to how they hurt us. They don't have to participate. They don't have to apologize. They don't even have to know.
That may sound hard, but remember, we are designed by God to forgive. We will be fulfilled at the core only when we choose to release others from what we think they "owe" us. We may think they owe us an apology. We may feel they should pay somehow. But true forgiveness is a no-strings-attached, total release from anything we think they owe us or deserve as punishment.
Who can you release today by your forgiveness?
Be Nice. Grace Wins.

Paid in Full
A Cody Johnson lyric stopped me cold: Jesus has already paid every debt I owe. Most of us walk around with a tally sheet. But the books were balanced two thousand years ago. Tetelestai. Paid in full.
