The Power of Restraint in Words
So I dipped my toe into a debate with someone who without solicitation started attacking me for my opinions and beliefs. I say, “dipped my toe” because right after thinking what I should say in my defense, I thought better of it. No amount of me “being right” was going to change this persons views and nothing would have been gained...Some things are better unspoken; don’t give them airtime. “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.”Proverbs 10:19 “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.”Proverbs 17:27-28 Some things are best left unspoken, such as the wrongs and mistakes people have done or dealt to us. The Bible mentions that in the multitude of words, sin is not lacking; therefore it is better not even to talk about that which could end up spreading rumors. We kind of become advocates of sin when we speak things that are best left unspoken. So we need to learn to be judicious about what things we choose to speak and what things we just choose to just let go. The Bible says a man of knowledge and understanding spares his words; that means he is careful about what he speaks and what he keeps quiet about. It is imperative that we ask God for that discernment and the self-governing ability to not speak things that are going to expose somebody else unnecessarily, but rather use words in a way that are pleasing to God. So Be Nice and let Grace win
